best anti-peck spray?

Recommended Posts

there are a few on the market and i was wondering which worked the best and whether they are worth the money.

i have one hen that is feather plucking the others - i know this because she is the only one with a nice pulmage of feathers!!! the cheeky monkey!

anyhow your suggestions as to the best or other things that work to stop the feather pulling will be greatfully received :D

We've had a pecking problem for a few months (in fact, ever since we got the chickens).

I guess the most helpful thing I can say is that if you can identify why the chicken is pulling, it'll go a long way to determining your solution.

If it's boredom, you could try hanging a few things in the run for them to jump and peck at.

If it's not enough protein in their diet, you could give them more grain.

If it's bullying, or they seem to like the taste, then a spray might work. We found Ukadex to be the most effective, but it didn't stop the problem entirely. And it really does have a long-lasting smell - as many other posts on here will testify. Or Stockholm Tar is similarly revolting stuff.

Our current solution is that Jim is wearing a saddle, but the result is that he's just getting pecked elsewhere really.

Next step is CCTV to identify and the culprit(s) and then put them in a seperate run for a while. Good luck! Hopefully you can nip yours in the bud with a bit of Ukadex. Be warned though, it will stain clothes and chickens so use with caution.
