Strange Poo - mystery illness

Recommended Posts

It is now the 3rd week where I have had to take up to seven of my twentythree girls to the vets (yes, my signature needs updating)!

They have been quiet, lethargic, some with one eye shut, a couple had the sniffles, one was rattling. they all had runny poo, three of them as below, bright green and yellow. They have had 2 injections of Tylan and 2 of Duphamox LA and have been on Tylan Soluble for 15 days.

The poo was tested for Coxcidiosis/Worms/Giardia/Salmonella/Compilobactor, all were negative.

They have only had their normal diet of mash, mixed corn and some greens.

They have all been wormed on Flubenvet recently.

They have either stopped laying or only lay brittle or soft during this illness.

The girls I first took all now seem quite a bit better, but another 2 are doing this weird poo. One of them seems very poorly.

The Vets (Not Chicken specialists but trying to help), have no idea what they are treating.

Any ideas would be appreciated as this seems to be spreading through the rest of my flock.

green poo is mentioned a few times here http://www.welphatchery.com/poultry_health.asp

Also try sending off a poo sample to Retfords, maybe have a word with them first to see if they can run a wider test than your vet - it will probably be cheaper that way too

Have the hens been wormed recently? thats certainly worth a try

Also green poo can be bile, this happens where a chook doesnt eat enough, its worth checking the food for freshness, mould, damp etc.. just in case

They can product weird poos when they are antibiotics. They are on a broad spectrum antibiotic so if they are improving steadily and the faecal samples have not turned anything up, I would try not to worry too much. Is there any connection re the greens you are feeding and the frequency of these poos?

Thanks Redwing and ChuckyMama, they have been wormed and the poo test showed that they were clear.

The greens are only the same as they have always had.

Two of the girls that are doing the green poo had only had the Tylan in the water, they hadn't been ill until now and so hadn't had injections.

Their mash etc is really fresh and changed every day. so I am still puzzled by what this is.
