Separation question

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone...

My pekin bantam chicks are six weeks old and still with mum. I have two boys which are going to my breeders and one girl in which I am keeping. They are growing fast and I am going on holiday in two weeks time. Am I best to wait for mum to push them away or is it cruel to separate them before hand? I am looking to put mum back with the flock, send the boys to the breeders and bring a little girl home as a friend for the girl I am keeping. I will then be able to deal with intros when I get back. Only if I do this I need to set the wheels in motion this week so I know everything is ok before I go. My neighbour is looking after them and will do anything but I want to make things as easy as possible. Alternatively should I wait and do this all when I get back, by which time the chicks will be around nine weeks!

Sorry to go on :?

That sounds exactly like my plan - which went out the window 6 weeks ago  . I have 3 chicks now 15 weeks old. One is a boy and he was going to be rehomed/culled and I was going to add an Auracana in his place. My Auracana is now ready to collect, BUT the 'chicks' are still in with 'mum' ( a silkie bantam ) she has shown no sign of wanting to go back in with the big girls and the big girls don't want her back  I'm not saying that your chicks will be wanting to stay with mum for that long, I think it's a silkie thing - obsessive mothers ! , but if the mum is happy with the chicks at 6 weeks, I'd be inclined to leave her with them while you go away and sort it out when you come back.Hopefully , then, the mum will be more than ready to go back to the main group and the chicks will be old enough to seperate with less stress.

my 3 are 11 weeks on monday they're 'mom'(Faith) finally made her mind up last night that she wanted to start sleeping in the big house, she's been spending the day in with the other big girls since Tuesday but going back in with the 'kids' at night. She started getting narky with them last weekend now she treats then like the rest of the big girls do if they get to close they get 'smacked' the maran boy more so, Faith really dislikes him
