art12345
Hi I have a sultan that is 14mnth old. she was fine yesterday except for the odd very occasional sneeze. Today i have come home to find her stood still with her eyes shut, eyes closed and low to the ground. When i picked her up and moved her she keeps loosing her balance. She is obviously very unwell. i need a plan of action. Im going to syringe water into her beak as i dont know if she has been drinking and try and get her to eat some of her favourite food. I have some antibiotics from a few weeks ago when they all had a cold can i give her some of that? Anythin else i can do? Falling over isnt a sign of being egg ound is it? amc
Sorry to hear this - how old is she? I gave mine a 2nd round of antibiotics after a few weeks but I'm not sure it;s recommended, the vet may not agree?...I'm sure somebody with experience here can advise? Egluntyne
She sounds as though she needs to see a vet. Using old antibiotics that have been prescribed for another hen is not a good idea, ans their shelf life is limited, and they may not be appropriate. art12345
she is still the same today not eating hardly anything though i have seen her drink. i seperated her from the others in the broody cage within their run as i was worried they might pick on her. Have made an appointment at the vets tomorrow not looking good
Chucky Mama
She doesn't sound at all well, poor soul. If it is as horrible with you weather wise as it is here, it might be a good idea to bring her in out of the damp and cold. A carton or pet carrier lined with straw or shredded paper in the garage or kitchen would be a suitable place to keep her comfortable. art12345
Have been to the Vets he wasnt overly positive but has treated her with antibiotic for a severe respiratory infection. he said we need to try and get her to eat and drink. Ive been successfully giving her water in a syringe she ate 3 prawns and we managed to force feed her some tuna by me opening her bottom beak and OH gently pushing the food in until she swallowed it. what else food wise can i tempt her with did i read about someone giving their chicken baby food? Egluntyne
I'd make a sloppy mush out of pellets and water and see if she'll tuck into that. A sweetcorn garnish might tempt her.
