bloody, bald tail area, advice needed please

Recommended Posts

For last few days, Peanut chicken been listless (bit concerned but we just lost her pal to suspected egg peritonitis, and she moulting) but y'day afternoon she started behaving erratically and then we noticed het tail feathers gone and bloody stumps in their place. Treated them all for lice bout week ago but wondering if redose overdue and this might be cause? Today she is really sore and pecking at the sore area, and at the moult areas on her wings. She is v distressed. We separated her from others y'day. Should we use the louse powder when she is sore, and tomorrow should I try get Frontline from vet (he knows little bout hens)? What else might be of use?

She is ex-bat and we have had her for about a year, keep her with 3 other older ex-bats (2 of whom are moulting) and 2 pullets who are all fine.

Thanks for reading this.

Poor little Peanut. I've never had a particular problem with lice but I have used Xeno (ivermectin) drops on the skin of my chickens to kill any internal and external parasites. There's loads of info on the forum about mites/lice etc. I can also recommend purple spray to disguise the blood and clean/disinfect the sore and bloody bits. Could she have red mite? Also, if she lost her friend recently do you think she could be lonely?* Hope this helps and she recovers soon. x

* Just noticed that you do have other chickens so this isn't likely!!

Thanks for replying Barbara,

Don't think red mite as got Eglu Cube and really can't see any lice on her or others. Wondering if she doing it cos moult irritating her. She is now just hiding behind wall of ivy. Has had some porridge and raisins tho.

Will try get purple spray tomorrow (pesky Sundays), not sure from where tho. Do you have a brand name?

Thanks again.

You can get purple spray from horsey shops or agricultural merchants, is often labelled as Gentian Violet but nearly everyone in the horsey world calls it purple spray

If she is moulting the new feathers come through with a blood filled shaft so that will encourage her to peck and the others will also see the blood and peck at them sometimes with nasty results

I'd keep her separated until you can get the purple spray (the purple hides the red of the blood)

I would also treat her for mites and lice just in case since she is showing twitchy behaviour
