Ex Batts - some Q's

Recommended Posts

Hi

I've had my ex batts since January. Unfortunately we lost one back in June, and now just have two. They were laying brilliantly until Delilah's death (fox) and then they stopped for a week, with just a few very weird looking things. Then they started again, but only one egg per day (previously were 3 eggs most days).

Now we haven't had an egg for nearly 3 weeks. they both seem healthy (although one looks a bit bedraggled). Could it be age, and there won't be any more? Or just winter/moult type thing?

Also - I'd like to get some more but I'm really concerned about introductions going badly. We have an eglu classic in a 9x6 WIR so I could fit at least 2 more in, but I haven't got an area I can seperate newbies in. Is it worth getting more? Or should I wait until I only have one hen to make it smoother?

Would POL hens be more amenable to being bossed than more ex batts?

SOrry for all the Q's!

Hello there :)

First of all, well done you for taking on ex batts :) sorry that one of them didnt make it :/

Right:

About the lack of laying : The fox has probably scared them silly so that will explain the funny looking eggs, they may not be laying at the moment due to a moult, time of year, illness (ensure they are eating ,drinking, healthy weight, ect) age as you said, or they may just not feel like it

Is it possible to separate a fair section of your WIR and add a new girl or two, separating them and the ex batts? For example, even a stretch of chicken netting may do the trick. This way, they will introduce themselves but they cannot physically get to eachother. I put my new girls in the same run as my existing girls and within a few days of s"Ooops, word censored!"ping they sorted themselves out with no damage to either of them. Chickens shouldnt be kept on their own so i would reccomend getting two or three :) POL hens may be best, but its funny how the pecking order turns out :)

I wish you the greatest of luck with your chickens :)
