Smart Feeder - Light sensor values

I read a thread on the forum about dust baths and that some people put wood ash in theirs, we have an open fire which we start with a couple of firelighters and a layer of coal and then we burn logs, is this ash OK for them to use do you think ? Do you just put the ash in the tray and nothing else ? It would be great to re-cycle the ash, how often do you think it would need changing (i only have 2 girls............ so far! )
