Call Ducks & Wild Mallards

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Google' our 1yr old Call Duck has the run of our fron garden and lives in a small hut in the corner. Just over the fence from her hut, there is a river which is home to some Mallard Ducks. Currently there are 2 Drakes and 3 Ducks and none of them has shown any interest in Google, despite her constant 'shouting'!!

Google has her wings clipped so isn't able to fly off and play with them. However, I have thought about letting her wander down to the river for a play.

What are the chances of the Mallards mating with her?

If I let her flight feathers grow back, would she return to her hut at night or fly off, never to return?

Hi

Yes they could try to mate with her. They could end up drowning her as well as she will be a lot smaller they are quite rough when they mate and its not uncommon for two or three males to be trying. I think you do run the risk of her flying off, she may come back initially but as she is not one of their own they will also chase her away. But if you want to let her out for a play why not wait until the mating season is over as the mallards will calm down then. They will still keep her away food etc

What about getting a companion?

good luck Donald

Hi,

Decided to take Google down to the river and let her have a swim on a large pond that had been created by the recent heavy rain. The wild Mallards flew off as soon as we arrived so she had the pond to herself. She didn't make any attempt to head for the river or run off. In fact, when I decided to go for a walk along the river bank, she ran after me.

We have been our for a walk together twice now and she is more like a well heeled puppy than a duck!! Long may it last. However, the wild Mallards are now showing a lot more interest!

Maybe we'll see some romance, maybe not!
