Salisbury Auction Sat

Recommended Posts

Hi

Just wondering if anybody is going to the bird auction in Salisbury this Saturday. I've never been to a proper poultry etc auction so don't quite know how it works. I'm not taking any boxes so I can't buy anything (yeah right  ) but thought it would be a good time to see how the bidding works and how fast it goes, there's 1600 lots and they seem to be going to run 3 rings at the same time.

The fact that I'll get to spend a Saturday looking at lots of different birds is beside the point of course. Perhaps not registering for a number will stop me.

(Why don't they sell individual cockerels? Just wondered, don't want one.)

I went to the Salisbury auction last month and it sure was interesting. Just to let you know get a number first before you go look at the chickens and if they have already started to do the auction it will be really hard to get up and down the aisles due to the amount of people so it is so blasted hard to look at the chickens. GET THERE EARLY!! :)

Write down your birds number that you want also keep in mind that the reserve on the bird might be more then your wanting to bid. I was new and it took me a bit to figure it out but once I did I started to bid on one and the auctioneer keept bidding but I couldn't figure out who was bidding against me it seemed that I was the only one bidding but the price went up so blasted fast I refused once it got to £32.

But he never said sold so I asked someone and they said to go to the front and ask what the reserve was which in my case was £45, I asked if the chicken layed silver eggs :P Anyway left with no chicken  Saw others but they had already did the bidding so I was very unlucky ... mostly due to my ignorance of the situation. So hope you find a few that you like and good luck bidding!

Ok thought it would probably be a fast paced thing. There's some white leghorns lf and then a couple of odd ones in the bantam bit (didn't know that they did bantam leghorns). £45 that must have been a special chicken. No danger of bidding if that's the prices.

I really don't want to buy anything as I'm away for a week and they'll be going to their holiday chalet in Kent and I don't think my mum will be impressed if I take squabbling chooks to her.

Great morning out, thoroughly recommend a visit. Wow so many birds. Teeny tiny bantams and quails right up to peacocks. The noise was incredible, bit wiffy too, dread to think what a hot day could be like. :vom:

Was a really good experience and gave me a better idea of what I would like to get next. My want list has now changed again to include a copper-blue/black marans, ancona, sumatra, leghorn & anything jubileed/millfeured/splashed.

I was really good and didn't take a box or register but then looking round I saw there was an odd appenzeller-spitz' & a barnevelder, (both on the had and lost list due to death and being a chap) so succumed but alas they went for quite high prices £32s odd a piece. A lady I got talking to was eyeing up a couple of ambers but only wanted one so we were going to split them and have one each but then we realised we'd need to stay till 4 o'clock (this was at 11) and gave up.

Bidding was fast and you had to really had to concentrate on the auctionneer as he did sound rather like a race-horse commentator and not very loud over the chickens shouting and crowing. They did bantams and LF at the same time too.

I could be swayed to ducks you know, they were adorable, so clean compared to the dirty bumed chooks. Did buy a hang up drinker for £2.
