stratton_henry
Hi, Nutmeg (aka Nutster), our much loved chicken passed away peacefully in her sleep last night (aged 5 years). This leaves us with just one chicken (Pavlova, aka Plop). Pavlova is about 4 years old. We don't want to get any more chickens because we hope to go traveling fairly soon. We do know a chap that has dozens of chickens (about 20 miles away) that may take her for us but would the stress of the move be too much? Has anyone had any experience of looking after just one chicken? What would be the best for Pavlova? a) Live out her last few months with us b) Move to be with other chickens c) any other suggestions? Thanks
sandyhas3chucks
I have personally just rehomed a single chook (well come to me and is now one of 7. Personally I would NOT send her to a big flock especially at her age. If she is happy (this girls was not) and you can be her flock and she is living with you, not shut in a run on her own,I would let her live out her time with you, if not see if some kinds person perhaps in the same predicament can take her for yu. Well that is my opinion anyway.. good luck and sorry that you lost her pal
Tweety
Sorry to hear about Nutmeg, although she had a long life and peaceful death with you. As you no doubt know, chickens are flock creatures and need the company of others ideally. I suppose a lot depends on Pavlova - she is a good age herself but may well live some time if Nutmeg is anything to go by. I don't think I have been very helpful but, depending on Pavlova's physical condition and character, I would be tempted to find her a good home with other chickens. Good luck!
