poor old mabel has a limp

Recommended Posts

Hi all, bit worried about our mabel she is walking with a bad limp. She was ok this morning but now she seems really unhappy, just sitting in the run not wanting to move about. I am wondering if she has fallen off one of the perches or the cube ladder, shes quite a big girl (silver sussex) and the boss of ten birds and is only about 8 months old. Should i just leave her and see how she gets on? Would be really greatful of any advice. Thanks PBG. :(

If there are no obvious breaks - (you can gently feel down her bones to see if there is any obvious creaking or instability) rest is the best medicine. Confine her to a smallish space with food and water close by so she doesn't have to move around to eat and drink. She may need some help getting to bed if there is a ladder or similar. If there is no sign of improvement within 48 hours I would get her to a vet. She may need some anti inflammatories or further investigation. Metacam can be use in chickens but the dose has to be carefully calculated and it must always be prescribed by a vet.
