Will she get fed up?

Recommended Posts

I realised my pekin bantam was broody last week and by the weekend she was sitting on her (unfertilised) eggs constantly. I ordered some fertilised eggs for her to hatch but they got held up in the bank holiday post and then by the time they had arrived and rested I couldn't swap them over until yesterday. So, she was sitting on her eggs for probably a good 5 days before any incubation started.

May be a stupid question but I'm just wondering if she is likely to realise it's taking too long to hatch them and give up before the 20 days are up?!

Thanks

Sarah

As your broody is a Pekin, I'd say you'll be OK. Pekin's and Orpington's are two of the best breeds at being broody hens. As long as she's sitting now and is not disturbed for the next few days I think she'll stay the course. You've nothing to loose, if she gets up, she gets up, but I suspect it will be OK. In my recent hatch (see pictures here), my Pekin went broody on 28th March and I didn't sit her on any eggs until 2nd April, and there were no problems.
