Limping lethargic chicken

Recommended Posts

My Gingernut Ranger chicken that I've had for 1 year is limping and hopping around as if she's lame, but nothing appears to be broken or injured. She is a bit lethargic and mostly sitting in one place. On the inside of her right leg one of her scales has rubbed off. Her legs feel quite warm (but I haven't felt my healthy chicken's legs to compare). My sister is a vet and had a look at her yesterday, but she doesn't know much about chickens and said it could be an infection needing antibiotics. Or could it be scaly leg - have just read about that on the Omlet site? Any ideas much appreciated!

It doesnt sound like scaly leg, that is more obvious and doesnt usually make a chicken lame

The hen will have been vaccinated against Mareks which is always a worry when a chook goes lame

I'd guess that its just a sprain. Try confining the hen to a smallish space for a few days, a tall rabbit hutch or dog crate would be good, rest is probably the answer
