Freeconomy web site

Recommended Posts

stumbled across this web site which seems to have a brilliant philosophy but obviously needs loads of people to join to make it work :D

I've listed myself as a food forager, amongst other things, and have requested info from other fporagers on good spots for foraging. But, there's so many possibilities with this site, you could list yourself as a chicken sitter for example! :D

The Freeconomy Community's aim is to help reconnect people in their local communities through the simple act of sharing. Not only is sharing our resources better for the environment, it saves you money and builds friendships with those people who live closest to you. It is what we call a WIN-WIN-WIN situation.

We have a similar ethos in our street of some 95 houses... we have an informal directory of who has which skills and either mate-rates or barter prices. It works very well for us and everyone is happy.

For instance, my neighbours 3 doors along have 2 large allotment plots and more organically grown veg and fruit than they know what to do with, every Friday after 4pm, they are 'open' (well, their front room is) for people to buy or barter goodies.

Another neighbour is an ardent crafter and teaches others

I trade eggs, cakes and jams/jellies. Even the taxi driver across the road offers friendly rates for neighbours.

It started off by word of mouth really - we have a very friendly street and grew from there. We went 'official' last year when a neighbour started up a members only website/board where any resident could log on and log their skills/products/offered stuff (it's a sort of micro-freecycle too).

I have been picking the brains of an upholsterer down the road while I was renovating an old chair I'd been bequeathed.

It's all very friendly and informal in essence and works well - a new neighbour is a child carer and offers baby sitting services, she is delighted as it gives her a way to get to know everyone. I also hold the keys of about 10 neighbours and look in on their houses twice a day when they are away, this started off with one neighbour who had an elderly and sick cat who needed meds; he is an aromatherapist so I get free massages in return. :D

When we have our yearly street party, we have honesty tables where folk can bring/take things.
