LauraJ
One of our hens has laid an odd egg - it is shell only and looks to be a couple of eggs worth, all crumpled up and solid. She has done it twice now, the first time about two months ago and then again on Sunday. Both times she has stopped laying for a few days, and spent about two days looking a bit puffed up and off colour (but still pootling round the garden and eating bugs and my plants) before spending a couple of hours in the hen house, laying her dodgy egg and coming out again right as rain. She then has a day or two off laying before returning to normal - one HUGE egg every morning. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this or how I could stop it from happening? I'm not worried about the eggs, but I hate the thought of her being uncomfortable all that time
migsy
I don't know but is she getting a bit elderly? I hope someone has some idea for you.
Sandychick
I've seen the crumpled up shell stuff from one of mine. She does do yolk as well, but they all eat that in seconds That might me what happened here. A bit of extra calcium might help her form better shells. I use liquid Zolcal (put it in their water) which has calcium and vitamin D.It gets absorbed quickly.
