Best liner/ bedding for drop tray

One of my original girls, Pepper died on Thursday, and now Daisy looks like she has the same syptoms

 

Pepper seemed completely normal in the morning, then looked a a bit off for a couple of hours. I assumed it was just a soft shelled egg on the way, but she went and sat in the nest box, and didn't move from there. By the next morning, she had died.

 

Daisy has now done exactly the same. She was running about in the garden this morning, then looked hunched and not too good for an hour or two, now sleeping in the nest box. After Pepper, I'm fearing the worst. Daisy is only 1 year old.

 

If anyone has any ideas what could be causing this, or have experienced anything similar, please let me know. I'm so upset about Pepper, really can't face the thought of loosing Daisy too.

Give her a thorough once over checking vent, nose for discharge, listen to chest for rattling or rasping, gently feel abdomen for fluid, tightness or swelling, feel her crop to see if it has any food in or feels overly squishy, check for lice, have a look at her poos and let us know if there is anything that doesn't look right. When was she last Flubenvet wormed and when did she last lay?

Panic over!! This one WAS a soft shelled egg (and another load of strange stuff with it ) I brought her in the house because she was looking so sleepy and awful. Now she is back outside bouncing about with the others
