lianne33
We have two broody girls and sent for some fertilised eggs. They have been sitting and today is 21 days. When we got up this morning one of the eggs had started to hatch but the chick was dead.It looked fully formed. The two hens sitting are 13 months old.Any advice would be appreciated. Redwing
Are they sitting together? A broody will sometimes kill its own chick especially if its wet - its rare but does happen. The chick could have also died as it just wasnt strong enough Its more likely though that if they are together that the other broody killed the chick, broodies should really sit alone although you do hear of the odd cases where mums share chicks happily If you are around for the day then just keep an eye on things, if you arent about then it would be wise to separate the broodies if they are together
lianne33
Thankyou for your reply.Yes they are sat together and have been sharing the eggs. The pekin has had the most under her with the silkie having the odd egg under her.The egg this morning had a peice took out of the side about the size of a ten pence peice.Im around all day and have been keeping an eye on them and if need be will check in the night.
