camilladyer
Hi there, I'm wondering if anyone can help me and my poor little chicken I had two chickens from omlet two years ago, and lost one last year who stopped laying eggs, then kept passing eggs that were not formed properly, ending in her going downhill and dying Almost exactly a year later my other chicken has started laying what I think people on this forum are calling a "lash". They are milky white, almost fatty intestine-like looking. She hasn't laid an egg for some weeks, and has laid a few "lash" recently. She is looking quite sorry for herself, with her tail drooping and quite slow moving, but appears to be drinking and eating and does come out into the run (our other chicken ended up sitting in the eglu and not coming out before she died). She has also had some diarrohea.I just feel so sad for her and it's so upsetting to see as she is such a lovely chicken. Can anyone help??? Thank you. Chucky Mama
If she has only been off colour for 24 hours she could have a soft shelled egg on the way. If however she has been unwell for longer I would have a gentle feel of her abdomen to see if there is any swelling, tightness or fluid build up. It is possible that she has developed peritonitis (or abdominal growth).
Sandychick
Sounds like soft shelled eggs are causing her problems. I find it difficult to tell if they are laying them, as the softies get eaten in seconds, so never usually find the evidence. I have one who has had runny poo, and soft shelled eggs for a while - someone on here suggested bokashi bran for the poo situation. She loves the stuff and it is really making a difference (poo is almost normal). I also gave her some zolcal for extra cacium + vit d. Her eggs now have shells, although weak ones that usually break in the nest box. This is all in a week, so I am hopefull that she should be doing normal eggs and feeling much better for it soon. I am now thinking that the diarrohea was the cause of the soft shelled eggs. Have they been wormed recently with flubenvet? Also might help to keep her on just layers pellets and no treats or green stuff, to make sure she is getting the right balance of food.
