joe14
Good evening all Anybody know how or have any tips to stop wild birds stealing chicken feed?? I was thinking the other day that my chickens seem to be getting through their food quicker than normal. This morning a filled the hopper with enough pellets to last my 3 chickens for two days. Got home after work and a flock of starlings flew up out of my run...... Went in and the hopper was empty!! Anybody got any ideas?? Many thanks for any replies
Green Tea
Have you seen this post: http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=78156 Bit too expensive for me but looks good. I have a problem with the pigeons here, they go right into the run to steal the chicken food - it's quite funny when they forget how to get out and get trapped in there though, they are such stupid birds
Chucky Mama
You really need a different type of feeder like a treadle feeder or the grandpa feeder. There may be different types out their too- usually called 'rat proof feeders' These 2 feeders work of the weight of the chicken opening the hatch to the food. I made one Click as I didn't get on with my treadle feeder as it clogged and the food got damp. Had I not made one I think I would have ended up spending the earth and getting the Grandpa feeder. Mine used to do that but as they were at risk of picking up disease from the wild birds (chickens picking up fallen food that sits amongst the wild bird poo) I now feed the wild birds in the front garden away from the chickens.
