Starlings stealing food

Recommended Posts

Good evening all :D

Anybody know how or have any tips to stop wild birds stealing chicken feed??

I was thinking the other day that my chickens seem to be getting through their food quicker than normal. This morning a filled the hopper with enough pellets to last my 3 chickens for two days. Got home after work and a flock :o of starlings flew up out of my run...... :x Went in and the hopper was empty!! Anybody got any ideas??

Many thanks for any replies

You really need a different type of feeder like a treadle feeder or the grandpa feeder. There may be different types out their too- usually called 'rat proof feeders' These 2 feeders work of the weight of the chicken opening the hatch to the food. I made one Click as I didn't get on with my treadle feeder as it clogged and the food got damp. Had I not made one I think I would have ended up spending the earth and getting the Grandpa feeder.

hehe- i have the opposite problem- my girls sit under the wild bird feeders waiting for nuts and seeds to fall down and then gobble them up! greedy birds!

Mine used to do that but as they were at risk of picking up disease from the wild birds (chickens picking up fallen food that sits amongst the wild bird poo) I now feed the wild birds in the front garden away from the chickens.
