billathome65
Ok did a search and just want to clarify is a soft egg due to lack of Calcium?? If so I have added some grit instead of the hanging blocks I have in the run. These are new layers as there was only one egg I am assuming Harriet hasn't started laying yet so its probably Maisey's egg? She seems fine in herself but as I'm new to chucks I'm obviously a little concerned. Advice wanted please Bill
bostock422
just stick with the grit for a few days and see what happens
billathome65
2nd day 2nd soft shell checked chucks both seem happy vents clean can get 3 fingers between the bones on vents so if i read stuff right that's normal distance? Giving grit/Oyster shell how long before I start to worry? Cheers Bill
Sam
No idea if this is recommended or not but Matilda often has a few soft eggs so what I do is make a porridge with water, and put quite a lot of grit and a few mealworms in there. A lot of the grit gets eaten and then she continues on laying normal eggs. Not sure if its coincidence or if it actually works, but its worth a try. Chooks76
Glad your birds have got it sorted! I woke up this morning to see what appeared to be a broken egg on the roosting bar with a piece beneath in the droppings tray. However it was actually two eggs! The first one was so soft and I guess small that it had simply squished through the roosting bar gap. The second one was whole but like jelly. I presuming this is normal for birds laying their first eggs? However I have a question....Both eggs were in exactly the same place (one fallen below the other) and I'm sure I checked yesterday afternoon and they weren't there. Is it possible for the same bird to have laid both of those 'eggs' last night or before 7am this morning when I opened the coop door and let them out? Sam
Hey Chris, when Matilda often has a soft egg, she usually lays another one soon after. She usually just drops them wherever shes standing and then sometimes eats them, so it's best to take them out before they get a chance! No idea why but she seems fine from it! Her first egg she ever laid for us was a softie and it often takes young hens a while to get into a good laying routine so the first few may be soft but should soon become normal. Great new photos on your Flickr btw! "Is there anybody down there?"
Chooks76
They seem to have got their act together as I've had four eggs from two hens and they have been fine. Just waiting on my 3rd chicken to start laying now. Yeah that photo made me laugh too!
