Egluntyne Posted July 29, 2011 Share Posted July 29, 2011 I had four Fenton Blues a couple of years ago. 3 of them laid beautiful blue eggs and the 4th laid green. However, they weren't very robust. One developed a tumour in its thigh bone at about 18 months and had to be PTS and the others all developed peritonitis in their 2nd year. They were also rather skittish. She was one of their first batches and came with a 90%+ chance of laying blue eggs (set me back £35) - she lays...cream eggs Lovely place to get chickens and they have offered me a discount on a pure breed blue egg layer in the future. In terms of the bird herself, she is sweet but more skittish than my other hybrids. Nice cream coloured egg - just not blue. Back to the drawing board for their breeding programme perhaps. Its quite confusing all the different names for the same chicken! I got some from Widgets before and they've been fine I see they have expanded to sheep and pigs now too. Maybe we could get a copper black or perhaps just see what looks good at the time. I don't really mind about the colour of the egg the price seems to have gone down to £25 now but its nice to know which lays which though so you can tell how they're doing but I imagine if you have quite a few it would be a lot more difficult. Chucky Mama Posted July 30, 2011 Share Posted July 30, 2011 I think that you should just go and see what takes your fancy. The hybrids are all out in a field together and the pure breeds separate. We got a Columbian Blacktail, the Fenton, and a Copper Black. They were very healthy and are all sweet chickens.
