kittyl Posted August 24, 2011 Share Posted August 24, 2011 This is a horrid choice I'm facing with my little pekin Bibble. After months on & off ab's she has damage to her eye & is on some last try medicine, but after the first drop it has irritated her eye so much she has rubbed it to bleeding & it is more swollen than ever. I may have to make the decision quite soon, have it removed or have her pts. I'm looking for anyone else who's had this op done, any information on how it went/recovery would be really helpful! The anaesthetic as always is the greatest hurdle and you need to carefully reintegrate her back into the flock once she has healed - oh and of course the cost may or may not be an issue for you. kittyl Posted August 24, 2011 Author Share Posted August 24, 2011 yes, the anesthetic would be risky for a little mite like her. I'm more concerned about her recovery after the op. She cant see much, if anything with it now anyway so that wouldnt be much of a problem. Its the pain & trauma for her & the problems if she's away from the others for long. The vets should give her some pain relief. It may be a relief for her to have the eye out as it could well be causing her some pain at the moment. kittyl Posted August 25, 2011 Author Share Posted August 25, 2011 It is causing her pain, its all sore & swollen around it where she rubs it on her wing. the vet confirmed she has glaucoma & is blind in it and nothing will fix it now, it has to be removed. Sandy I'd be interested to know about the op & her recovery. Was she very sore afterwards? how long did it take her to recover? I've got to wait till Tuesday for the vet to ring me to arrange it, Poor Bibble I hope she can hang on in there for 3 more days, I can only give her pain killer once a day, when it hurts she rubs it till it bleeds, then I rinse it with cool boiled salt water & let her stay in the kitchen until its calmed down a bit. tonight she's sleeping indoors, I dont know what else to do. kittyl Posted August 31, 2011 Author Share Posted August 31, 2011 I know a specialist vet who is her best chance, having seen the recent photos of Bibbles eye he thinks the area is too damaged to have much chance of success & if there was there'd be a high chance of postop infection. I could put it off in the hope it heals up a bit, but I dont think I can put her through any more I think it would be kinder to have her pts. So sad, she's a wonderful little hen, so friendly. I spent alot of time with her while she brooded & hatched 6 gorgeous chicks, she was a wonderful mum, her 15 week old babies still follow her around they seem in awe of her & even though they're bigger than her she's still protective over them! Tweety Posted August 31, 2011 Share Posted August 31, 2011 That is very sad, Bibble sounds such a lovely hen but, if you think she is suffering and there is not much chance that the operation would be successful, it is the right thing to let her go. You say that the specialist vet has seen photos of the eye, so presumably he has not seen it in the flesh as it were. Is it worth letting him have a look at it properly before making the decision?
