chronic egg bound hen

Recommended Posts

Our cream legnar is egg bound again!

12 months old. Started off a good layer then became egg bound and off to the vet for injections and recovered but a poor layer since with no shell eggs, oversized eggs or eggs within a membrane.

she's egg bound again. Pale floppy comb with black tinges, not eating but drinking lots, very little droppings.

In the house in a dog cage with a radiator near by and hot water bottle in a makeshift nest box and given her 10 ml ACV, 1/4 tsp sea salt, and 10 ml calcium in 1ltr water. Nothing happened for 3 days.

called the vet she said yes more injections may help but if its chronic then it maybe better to put down.

diet wise may have been guilty of too much corn in the early days but for the last three months none at all just layers pellets and they free range.

any miracle cures out there?!!!

I agree that there are no miracle cures. Calcium can do as much harm as good. You can support her (I wouldn't add any salt to her diet) but she sounds like she is physically incapable of producing a normal egg and this in turn is making her very unwell. I am afraid that unless you want to put her through prolonged treatment or surgery, you may have to consider having her put to sleep. She sounds pretty unwell and miserable at the moment. Too much corn in the early days will not have caused this
