jennja73
I have 2 silkie bantams, both of whom are about 2 years old. One of them is currently moulting. She is eating and drinking fine, but she seems to have no balance. She's wobbly on her feet and sometimes puts her wings out to stop herself falling over. Her tail is down and it bobs around, almost looking like it's making her lose balance. This is the second day she's been like this. I have separated her, given her some vitamins and a shot of lifeguard. She's perky enough, but I'm worried it may be Mareks, although she is prob too old for Mareks. Her breathing is normal, so I don't think it's a respiratory thing, but guessing she may have an ear infection. Does anyone have any ideas?? Also, how do I change my singature?! the machine won't let me! tells me I have too many characters and too many similies and the code won't work!! All help appreciated! Thanks
Space Chick
I'm sorry, but when I saw the title of your post, I thought Mareks... And then seeing that it was a Silkie, it made me think Mareks even more Mareks is a herpes virus so can stay in the body and is triggered by an event... Such as a minor illness or cold, so her age does not mean it can't be Mareks One test for is is to see reactions in the legs... If you pushed her legs (whilst hanging down, so you are hold g her body not her legs) against a table, if she reacts and curls her toes in BOTH legs, it's unlikely to be Mareks, although if she doesn't seem to react in one or both legs, then it could be Mareks I have lost 2 Silkies to Mareks, it is sooo upsetting I have 6 Silkies now, but they have all been Mareks vaccinated. jennja73
I've done the leg test, she has no grip in her toes. Her wings are both normal though, no obvious drooping on one side. I have now noticed her ears are green? I lost a hen to mareks about a year ago and the vet gave me some meds to inject the rest of the flock with a vaccine - which I did (Including the silkie) which is why I was questioning Mareks, as she has been vaccinated against it? It's all very odd!!
Chucky Mama
I would suspect Mareks too. A vaccine only works if the recipient is in good health and is not already harbouring the disease. Few vaccines offer lifelong protection too. Are you sure the vet didn't give you antibiotics rather than a vaccine. Poultry vaccinations come in mega bulk for commercial flocks and once opened they have to be used quickly. I would doubt very much if your vet had vaccine lying around. jennja73
It was definitely a vaccine. We're lucky enough to have a poultry specialist vet who gave us the vaccine for my other girls once he diagnosed my rir with mareks. We had to inject them all, so Im 100% certain what I was injecting them all with. I just hoped that once they had been vaccinated they were safe. She has been well for 18 months since the vaccine. I ll take her back to the vet tomorrow.
Redwing
the Mareks vaccine really has to be given as early as possible in the birds life, at a day old is ideal but failing that before the bird is 6 weeks old Vaccination of an aproximately 6 month old chook who has already been exposed to the disease wouldnt have the best chance of success and is as good as wasted money. The vaccine is also quite open to error - not keeping the solution in the right environment between injections, not using within an hour, not mixing correctly or injecting in to muscle instead of under the skin for example Look her over for signs of any other illness though just in case, a bad mite infestation or respiritory infection for example can cause weakness - moulting doesnt help as the stress can bring on an illness
