Sooo much pooping

I need to start knitting a blanket for my first grandchild! I am a very keen, but not terribly expert knitter so I am looking for something more interesting than a plain stocking/garter stitch but that's still simple enough for me to get finished well in advance of the arrival!

 

Any suggestions? I have looked on ravelry but I find the US patterns very confusing!

I can recommend Sirdar Pattern no 1756 is a jumper, hat & blanket set I've knitted the blanket and it was really easy to do. The jumper is pretty easy too.
