Crusty skin and closed eyes?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Hopefully somebody can help?

We have kept Polish Bantam hens for the past 8 years. They happily free range in the garden during the day and sleep in the Eglu at night. We currently have 4 hens. One of the hens, a 3 year old White Crested Blue Poland has a skin problem. All around her face it seems to go very crusty and causes her eyes to close up overnight and we have to open them for her every morning. At first we took her to the vets he gave us some antibiotic cream for her eyes, this did not really solve the skin problem. We then tried rubbing the skin on her face area with vaseline just before she went in to sleep every night this seemed to cure her for a short while. We have also tried putting her head feathers in a band as the head feathers with Polish hens can cause problems. We even tried using E45 skin cream! There is no visible bug infestation and they are wormed regularly. However the skin problem this month seems a lot worse and she also has a yellow waxy substance that comes from her ears. For the past 2 years she has been a happy hen despite the skin and eye issues. But she has now started looking weaker and not eating as much as she did before. We are not really sure what else we can do for her? Any ideas??

Hi - I also keep polands, but have never had skin issues and I'm not sure what else to suggest. Do you think it could be an infection? I have had an orp with with similar sounding ear problems - stinky, yellowish, cheesy gunk. I cleaned them out several times gently with warm water and cotton bud, but really she needed antibiotics as it did come back. I know some keepers even use human ear drops (obviously not recommended). I'm not sure this is the same thing your girl has as mine had a pale face and was a bit shrivelled but no eye problems at all. She became quieter than usual although still eating etc normally.
