Heidi-Hi
Hi all, I am thinking about getting a couple of smaller girls that I can keep closer to the house. Can anyone tell me how Pekins compare size wise to Bantams? For example, a Wyandotte Bantam v a Partridge Pekin. I would love a couple of Blue Laced Wyandotte Bantams, but think they might still be too big. Is there really much difference between them and their bigger sisters? Many thanks, H. Redwing
It depends on the type of bantam, pekins are smaller than many other bantams but they are feisty which more than makes up for the difference, I have Pekins and Wyandotte bantams living together with no problems
Heidi-Hi
Thanks Redwing, I knew you would post as you are such a Wyandotte fan When you compare the two, would you say the Bantam Wyandottes are almost double a Pekin size? I've also read somewhere that the Pekins go broody more easily than the Wyandottes. Do you agree? Thanks!
Redwing
It depends on the type of Wyandotte some are bigger than others and more broody than others. The partridge ones are lighter built but more broody prone for example I'd say the average Dotte bantam is probably twice the weight of a Pekin and a few inches taller, I have some pics but my laptop is broken Almost certainly a Pekin will be top dog in a mixed flock
Heidi-Hi
Mmm, decisions, decisions! Got a couple of months to think about it anyway... all part of the excitement though!
coco
I have two seperate runs that both have pekins in. In my small run I have two small pekins that live with minature silkies, barbu d uccles and a nankin. In my WIR with my big girls I have three bigger pekins, a wyandotte bantie [who goes broody a lot] a gold laced orp bantie and a brahma bantie but she is the same size as some of my bigger girls. The pekins are quite capable of holding their own and all the girls get on really well.
