Caring for an elderly hen

Recommended Posts

My Molly is now 5 and still going strong, though I know age is beginning to take its toll on her. For some time now, she has had problems with her legs - if she tries to run towards or away from anything she tends to collapse. At first this worried me but she always gets up again after a rest and can actually walk without any problems. She no longer attempts to 'flutter' anywhere, can't do steps or ramps, and has taken to sleeping in the (now empty) duckhouse. since the ducks are no longer resident I did consider putting roosting bars in for her but I think it would be pointless as she can't get up there. I imagine she is suffering from 'old age', like any of us, maybe a bit arthritic in her poor ole legs. I had to soak her tootsies today to remove a small mud ball, and have given her claws a tiny trim as they are getting awful long - I guess with dodgy legs she just doesn't scratch around much now. I know I've listed a load of ailments, but she eats and drinks fine, she was out in the garden today pecking at leaves and bugs and sun-bathing, happy as Larry :) All the while she has a good quality of life I don't think there's a problem. Has anyone else cared for an 'older' lady? do you have any tips or advice? The scariest thought for me is when the day comes that the poor old legs really won't hold her up anymore :(

I have two elderly ladies now (one 5 and one 6 years of age). I too have noticed that my 6 year old is getting a bit doddery and collapses sometimes if the other one bumps into her or sometimes she thinks she can still run as fast as she used to and falls over - oh the joy of getting older. She still manages the climb up and down to the eglu, so really nothing has changed and I don't have to do anything different yet.

She even managed to lay 5 eggs for me the other week, whether she will lay again I shall just have to wait and see.
