cat constipation

Recommended Posts

Not the nicest topic I know

We have an 11 year old girl, who has bouts of constipation, like once every 4 months, it started about 12 months ago. We have a laxative from the vet and this works after about 24 hours. However, I was wondering if I should change her diet, she has always been on tinned Whiskas (I don't think they do these for older cats) plus Whiska pouches for older cats. I occasionally give her biscuits but rarely.

I know this is a common problem, and I know about exercise/clean litter tray etc, but I have read conflicting advice on feeding. I can ask my vet next time I go, but in the meantime I wondered if anyone had any experience?

Increasing fluid intake will help and obviously wet food contributes to the fluid intake to a degree. Peridale capsule or granules help with cats prone to constipation if you can get your cat to take it (either by mouth or in food) as do things like Katalax, Defur-um, Laxapet which can be given regularly to 'keep things moving'. Water fountains are great particularly with older cats who benefit from an increase in fluid intake.
