brahma bantam - last egg

Recommended Posts

Spotty has been sitting on 3 of her own eggs, last candling showed them all about the same size. Well ...

2 gorgeous little faces appeared on Wednesday, which would be 20 days, but the last one hasnt arrived.

Spotty is still multitasking, tending to her egg and looking after the chicks. How long shoud I let her

carry on with the egg, being as it is a true sibling of the others shouldnt it have hatched at the same time?

Would she be aware if the chick had died & abandon it? I also worry a bit that the other 2 may not get

enough attention while she's stuck on the egg, should I keep an eye on this? Sorry for the questions

but this is a new situation for me.

Hi Kitty,

I've just had a very similiar experience and on my first time hatching!! My broody hen Milly a pekin was sitting on 6 eggs, 4 of my own (2 where actually Milly's eggs) and 2 bought in aruacana eggs. All set together on the same day. Day 21 arrived and 2 of my eggs hatched (we could hear atleast one cheeping in the egg the night before!) Then nothing hatched on day 22, day 23 and aruacana egg hatched then on day 24 my last 2 eggs hatch one am, one pm. The last aruacana egg still hadn't hatched day 25, but eventually Milly just got up and left it. Sadly the only aruacana chick died 2 days later.

She did her best to multitask as you say, but it was a worry!!! They are all doing well now, the older 2 will be 2 weeks old tomorrow, younger 2 on tue.

All the best!

Yes Mimi, I did the pink nail varnish repair, and yes that egg hatched! However one of the 2 chicks hatched

is rather small & weak, but I dont know which egg it came from.

Spotty abandoned the 3rd egg this morning, I opened it & it was just smelly slush. I hope the little

chick survives, it would be sad only having one.

Oh Kitty I do hope so!!! Atleast you don't need to worry about that last egg and mum can focus on her babies!

I know exactly how you feel as I had bought 3 aruacana eggs to hatch and only added my own as a bit of an experimnet!!!! Well I broke one you'll remember lifting Milly, then one didn't hatch and the cute lttle one that did hatch only lived 2 days!!(we called it tuffty!) I have no idea why it didn't thrive and if your little one doen't thrive don't beat yourself up, there's very little we can do. They have their mum and she will teach them all they need.

My Milly sneaked in an extra egg, so 2 of the chicks are hers!!! (cheaky mummy)
