when mum leaves the chicks

Recommended Posts

yesterday Spotty was showing 6 week old Twinkle the ropes at freeranging, the other hens werent too

bothered (probably couldnt catch Twinkle anyway) the cockerel seemed quite interested & sweet with

her. Today Spotty was a bit stroppy & pecked Twinkle a few times & kept leaving her behind, tonight

Spotty chose to roost with the big girls! So Twinkle will be sleeping indoors with blind Giblet for now.

Tomorrow she will want to go back in the garden with her mum, will this be safe or once the bond has

gone is it gone forever? this is new to me, last year my pekin stayed with her chicks till they were

bigger than her!

Another question, Spotty has been quite stroppy since hatching the chicks, even more so lately,

she keeps attacking me. Is this a normal hormonal thing that will now settle down? if not I dont

like her anymore :notalk:

broodies will start to get fed up with chicks at about 6 weeks old and it can be very sudden one momment they love them the next the hate them.other will want to stay been a mommy for as long as possible and that can be differant from clutch to clutch with the same hen. at 6 weeks chicks will start to wondered off on their own exploring the places mom keeps stopping them from exploring. Twinkle might want to be with her mom but on the other hand she might not thats a wait and see momment.

as for Spotty's attitude I find with my 2 broodies that they normaly go back to thier normally attitude once they start to lay again which for they one is stroppy and untouchable and the other is a laid back loner but she been chilled out big time from day 1 with this brood
