Strange behaviour after being unwell

Recommended Posts

I have three young hens, bought 6 week's ago at 19 week's old. All three started laying daily their small brown pullet eggs after 10 days. One day, Rosie, who has a very red comb, laid a White translucent egg and wouldn't come out of the coop and wouldn't eat or drink. I hand-fed her with mushy pellets and water(she would only take a little), and took her to the vet, who, after exploring every orifice , found nothing wrong! I hand-fed her for a week.

However now two weeks' later , she is eating well, pecking at grass, preening, etc. In fact, behaving normally, except that she doesn't rush about like the other two, and is not interested in treats, and is slow to come out of the coop in the morning. The worst thing though is that she doesn't go into the coop at night and I find her underneath the nesting box, or in some odd corner. She also continually searches the ground or in the straw when in the coop, making a keening sound. She' s not take time. broody though. The vet checked that her oviduct etc. ....everything o k. She's not laying but maybe that will

Help! I'm stuck for any ideas after three years of hen keeping. I've loved looking after her, feeding her every two hours and carrying her here and there, but she's becoming a pet , and the hens belong to the local cafe for eggs for the bakers, so I'm worried.

My chickens have been very unwell recently and in order to eliminate different problems. Chickens don't like showing when they are poorly as I am sure you know so sometimes it can be confusing what is wrong! Maybe the following questions might help?

When were they last wormed? Was it with Flubenvet?

Could she be being bitten by Red Mite in the coop?

Is there evidence of other lice anywhere?

Is she being bullied by any of the other hens?

What do her poos look like? Are the normal? Is her bottom clean when she does poo?

Hope she improves!

Thanks for your help. She is now going in the coop at night and cuddling up to the other two.. No problems... They all get on. She is eating very well now, and s"Ooops, word censored!"ing around, but still not as fast in moving as the other two, and still not laying. There are no red mite or lice and her poos are normal. I hope I'll be making an eggstatic posting soon!
