My stunted naked neck.

Recommended Posts

So I bought two cuckoo naked necks from a breeder several months ago, at the time, one was about 10 weeks, the other about 15 weeks, I kept them both on growers and one of them came into lay, the little one. When I say little, I mean like bantam sized.

The lady I bought them from only reared large fowl, so I am very confused. The one that came into lay was laying eggs about 40g and the other girl has yet to lay. For a while I thought she was a bit small, but them thought perhaps naked necks weren't as big as I remembered. However, Magenta (the older, small one) has remained tiny and Columbia (the younger) has grown and grown, much taller, longer and broader.

I was told by a breeder once that some kind of interruption when the hen is very young can sort of stunt her growth, is this true? I am also concerned cos she is smaller than all my other birds (I mostly have hardy breeds, all large fowl) she will be at risk in the cold. Normally I don't get concerned about my birds in massively minus temperatures, they have always been fine, but her diminutive stature and completely naked neck (not even a bow tie) has me worried.

Should I just get over it, and remain vigilant? Or should I just shut up worrying?
