I've 3 marans that live happily in their eglu classic, but have a question about the nest box.

Margery laid her first egg in January and has been doing so almost every day since, Fifi laid her first egg yesterday but it ended up very squashed and broken.

Fifi had spent a couple of hours yesterday going in and out of the nest box, with poor Margery clucking away wanting to lay an egg, in the end Margery went inside also and I can only assume a bit of pushing and shoving went on which led to one egg being crushed.

They have free reign of the garden all day, so wondered if it would be an idea to provide a second nest box, I came across a plastic one called a chick box (www.chickbox.co.uk) and wondered if anyone has used one before, and if they've also had the problem of broken eggs?

Hi,

Thank you for your reply, I prefer the yellow one too so your chickens have good taste! :)

Do you put the chick box in the garden or do you place them inside the run area?

I have a 3m run extension, but wondered if the nest boxes are okay on the ground in the garden so I'm not clogging up the run too much.
