was broody now moulting....?

Recommended Posts

Is this normal? she was broody for quite a while, then i saw a few feathers lying around the coop, this morning I have gone in and she is completely bald around her neck and the coop looks like a pillow fight has happened!

Should I be doing anything?

I don't want her to be stressed, she looks a real mess but she is eating and drinking normally and the others don't seem to be singling her out anymore, they did when she was broody, they were really mean :(

I'm not sure but I believe that broody hens will lose feathers, especially around the neck and lower body, as this allows better contact with any eggs she may be sitting.

I expect it's like going out in the cold without a hat, and maybe try and keep her in the warm..?

After brooding & hatching apparently it is normal for a hen to moult (both of my broody hens who hatched did this last year!!) You could just make sure you add a good supplement to their water, something like life guard, just to help her along :D Obviously keep an eye on her too!
