Intro's - a positive tale - so far!

Recommended Posts

After losing one of 2 chooks earlier this week, we needed to get a couple of new chickens to keep old Fred company. She might be 4yrs old, but feisty and still laying most days.

We went and bought 2 new chooks (an Amber Link and Barred Rock). Lovely things, sold as POL but young - Wattles and Combs almost non existent!

We netted off 2 bits of garden, and put the newbies in one and Fred in the other - and all good. So last night, bit the bullet and let Fred go to bed as usual, and then when she was settled, posted the other 2 into the coop - leaving the door open so not confined. This morning they are almost old friends! Fred is letting them eat/drink and just chasing around their 2mx2m 2 tiered WIR once in a while to prove who is boss.

Fingers crossed, all will be OK. Keeping a very close eye on them - but cautiously optimistic!

(NB - aware of it being good idea to separate for a while in case of disease - but we do not have a lot of room, and didn't want Fred alone for too long - so took a calculated risk.... Should also point out if intros not gone this smoothly, we did have a plan B!)

So for anyone with a bad experience behind them - don' let it put you off in the future - it can be positive!

That's good news - do keep an eye on things though, it can start off harmoniously and then things can change. Sounds as if you are off to a good start though. I have integrated successfully several times, and the golden rule (in my experience) is that if it isn't working, go back a stage and slow things down.

Watching like a Hawk! Having the 2 levels is certainly helping - the newbies are light and haven't got their wings clipped, so hop up out the way and poor Fred is left wondering where they have gone!

Fingers crossed it all continues OK...
