serenlas
Sadly I lost my 2 year old Bellatrix to what I think was vent gleet on Easter Monday. I'd been away for 5 days and hadn't noticed anything wrong with her before I left, my friend who came in daily to feed them didn't notice anything untoward, and by the time she started to look unwell it was just too late for her. On the vet's advice we culled her It's all a learning journey I suppose - I should be able to spot the signs earlier if it happens again.. I noticed that one of my two , Ginny, had gummed together tail feathers and a balding, slightly blood streaked bottom area, so she went to the vet on the Tuesday morning because I was concerned that she may also have vent gleet. The vet confirmed that she was bleeding internally but wouldn't commit to a diagnosis, saying it'd be impossible to say what Bellatrix had had without an autopsy (I'm pretty sure it was vent gleet though - the symptoms match up and the smell of her will haunt me forever). He gave her an antibiotic injection and prescribed her 1ml a day, which she finished yesterday. He said that I'd need to throw any eggs away while she was on medication but I stupidly didn't think to ask how long I needed to throw the eggs away for after she'd finished. I don't know what the antibiotic was called because the bottle was thrown away, but he did say that it's the only antibiotic licensed for chickens if that helps? (you're all going to tell me there are dozens of chicken antibiotics now aren't you?!) Also.. how long should I leave it until I get a couple of new chooks? I'm thinking of waiting til May, so approx 4 weeks, assuming Hermione remains healthy and Ginny doesn't relapse - is that long enough do you think? serenlas
Thank you. As luck would have it I found the vet receipt in my coat pocket - she was given Baytril.
serenlas
And now that I've been able to search, I see that the advice is to avoid eating the eggs from anywhere between 1 week and NEVER AGAIN!
Egghead68
The advice used to be 1 week egg withdrawal and after that we all ate the eggs with no ill-effects. For some reason the advice has changed. I know of people who do not follow the new advice and are completely fine.
