Silly girl won't go to bed

Recommended Posts

Just over a week ago we bought 3 new hens to add to our small flock of 3.

The first day we let them all free range together and as they seemed to get on quite well we popped them all in the cube at night. The new girls had to coaxed into the run the first morning and the flock spent the next couple of days either in separate runs ( 3 new in one run 3 old in the other) or free ranging together with me watching over them with a water spray to discourage the hen who had decided to become top girl. Most of the pecking seems to have stopped, the new girls are allowed to eat and drink, but they know their places and dutifully run away the old girls run up to them and look menacing.

Every night they have been in the cube together and 2 of the new girls have worked out what to do and go to bed with the others, but one of them - Bambi - is a bit clueless and just sits outside the bedroom on a perch, looking a bit sorry for herself. Every night I have to climb into the run and post Bambi through the door, past 2 of the old girls, or pop her into the nesting box.

Any hints or tips to help her understand that she has to go to bed with her friends, or the doorway will be barred by top chicken? :anxious:
