gingersam
hi all i would really appreciate any advice that can be given on getting rid of fleas/ lice on my chicken. i noticed that there were little light brown creepy crawlies among the feathers, im assuming these are fleas or lice. im very shocked as we use a powder on them every four weeks. we also clean the house every week but i think the may have got them from a rescue bird that we got but has since died. i have been given lots of advice but im unsure which is right or wrong. thank you gingersam
Lavenders_Blue
They will be lice that you have spotted which are very easily dealt with. You need some Johnson's Anti-Mite spray which you should be able to pick up from any pet shop - it is sold for caged birds. Give your hens a good spray all over, making sure you part the feathers and spray onto the skin, as the spray needs to make contact with the lice. Pay particular attention to the fluffy knicker feathers and under the wings as this tends to be where the lice most like to hang out. 2 doses, a week apart should sort your problem out. There is an egg withdrawal period of 48 hours after each application of Johnson's Anti Mite Spray. Is the powder you are using Barrier Louse Powder? If so, chuck it in the bin. It smells nice, but is useless on creepy crawlies!
