crowing hen

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if anyone has had this problem? My little bantam leghorn Pip is nearly 2, she's often had problems

laying her eggs - periods of laying softies, dropping eggs in the coop & on the lawn etc. When she does lay

her eggs are quite large for her size and often have smears of blood on them.

Last year she crowed a few times, then stopped doing it, now she's started again but more often. I've just

presumed she has a hormone imbalance, the cockerel tells her off a lot & she doesn't let him on her.

I read that this can be caused by an infected ovary, has anyone had this happen? I'm wondering if this could

be causing the blood smears?

I've never taken Pip to the vet, I nearly did when she was laying a lot of softies & they kept getting stuck,

but I thought it sorted itself out & she seems so well otherwise - she's also really difficult to handle! so I'm

reluctant unless I really think it would help. If there is a problem she's had it (on & off) for at least 6months

I'd have thought an ovary infection would have made her ill by now?
