Dorothy07
Hi there This is my first time using the forum and I am hoping that someone might be able to help me. We have had our two gingernuts , Dorothy and Matilda for just over a year and we have an Eglu Go. Matilda stopped laying about 10 days ago , went off her food and her abdomen has become very swollen and on feeling it feels like water/fluid inside ie not a mass. I took her to a local poultry place where they diagnosed suspected 'Dropsy' . She apparently also had lice (not sure why as we put louse powder down in the coop everyweek when we clean the girls out. They suggested delicing her and also changing her feed which we have done. She certainly seems to be eating more but the swelling is not decreasing. Chap at poultry place did say that there is no cure for Dropsy and that realistically she would most likely have to be put down. Has anyone else had this? Has anyone else had their girls survive and come through this?
Egghead68
It sounds like she has peritonitis. There is information on the current thread about the Bluebelle.
Olly
It does sound like peritonitis, and there are some stickies about it on the 'Chicken Health' FAQs here. You could take her to a vet and have it drained, but it's likely to recur, and I'm afraid the advice you have had is probably right. However, helpful as the forum is, it's no substitute for veterinary advice so it would be best to take her to the vet for a proper diagnosis.
