Bexxx
Hi, am new to all this so sorry if this has been asked before. We have just assembled our omlet cube with 2m extension and just wondering what the ideal number of hens would be. We're hoping to have Orpingtons and were going to get 6 but considering they're quite large I'm wondering if less would be better? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks x
good_egg
It all depends on how much time they are getting out of the run, and probably how soft you are. I have 4 girls in a cube with 1m extension and they seem quite squished to me so I am upgrading to a WIR. I think they are absolutely fine in this space, but would prefer they had more room. Three of them are quite chunky so probably similar to orpingtons.... If you look at the omlet guide ( here http://www.omlet.co.uk/products_services/eglu_compare.php) then it looks like you should be fine, but if you go on other guides I think they suggest 2sqm or more per bird so would be a bit tight.... I think DEFRA suggestion of minimum is 1sqm per bird.....
