Dahato3
We have had a very exciting weekend hatching out our third batch of chicks. I am hoping that someone may be able to advise me as I have a slight concern with one. It looks healthy, bright clear eyes and can be very vocal.... Despite this it spends most of its time laying down flat on its tummy. I have looked at photos of splayed legs and as far as I can tell its legs look physically fine. When we have moved it to food it can and will make its way back to the heat lamp. It sort of bumbles along for a few steps, then lays down, then bumbles along again and always makes its way back. It will drink if we put it to water but by choice would stay under the heat. I know that one chick took a lot longer to hatch from being one of the first to pip, to being one of the last to break out. It may well be this chick but can't say for sure as four hatched over night!! (They hatched Saturday evening/Sunday morning) I would very much appreciate any advise as am unsure whether I need to intervene or whether it might simply need more time to rest and recuperate Thank you in advance
sjp
it could be it came out of the incubator a bit to soon I brought a newly hatched chick( I think it was barely 2 hrs. old) in early May to add to a lone chick with a broody that was a bit slow to get going I through it might have been a bit brain damaged at one point but he's now the most adventuress of the trio it took him about 2 days to catch up with my lone chick (he's 4 days older)and the other one I brought who's a few hours older
Dahato3
A good point.... We did put it back in for a while but didn't want to risk any remaining eggs in the incubator after a while. We have had a very interesting hatch this time round. I bought a dozen hatching eggs from our local smallholders show a while back and when I candled them at day 7 it soon became clear that 2 or 3 were way past day 7!! Luckily I had a broody so I put the eggs under her. Less than 2 days later the first pekin hatched, followed by another the day after that. The remaining eggs have all hatched between day 18 and day 21. (So not quite my previous text book hatches!!) As a result its been slightly harder to keep track at times. We will continue to monitor her carefully and hope that time will work in our favour.
