Introduce a new chick to bereaved broodies?

Recommended Posts

Will my new mums adopt a day old chick?

I feel awful, so please be kind!

Decided to let our 2 broody bantums hatch some eggs 4 weeks ago. Only one hatched and today, she drowned in the glug. It didn't cross my mind to move it out of the way.

IF I can get day old chicks, would they accept them? Or should I just let what's happened pass?

I do have experience of hatching eggs, and had just got a eglu to separate the broodies from the flock when I purchased the eggs, I am just so gutted I didn't foresee this.

it depends a lot on the broody first time broodies are more likely to reject or kill them. also the longer you leave a broody with out chicks the less of a chance of her accepting any new chicks. I added 2 day old chicks to a broody with a 4 day old chick successfully in May but she's a very good broody and it was obvious that she was unhappy with a lone chick plus the chick was not to happy with in minutes of the 2 going in with her she settled and chilled out their 20 weeks old on Wednesday her chick is 20 weeks old today or yesterday and she now hates them all equally along with half of her other 'chicks' from the last couple of years
