Sneezing

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm pretty new to chicken keeping. I've got 6 hens, 26 weeks old. A few of them have been sneezing for a week or 2 now. Their beaks are sometimes slightly wet but they aren't bubbling and are breathing normally. They're eating and seem otherwise happy. They are living in an airy coop with dust extracted wood shavings on the floor, so i dont think it a dust issue. I've been giving them a vitamin tonic in their water for a boost.

I wondered if I should just leave them to get over it themselves or need to intervene and take them to the vet?

Any advice gratefully received please!

Well I'm sorry to hear about your sneezy girls :( They can get colds and sniffles, but you do have to keep a close eye on them as trouble can develop very quickly! Check that they are all eating well (you can feel their crops once they are in roosting. they will be more docile) also check their poos :vom: yes it's all part of chicken keeping I'm affraid  Basically you need to look out for any changes in their behaviour too. If you notice any bubbly eyes or hear and wheezing they may need antibiotics, you will need to take them to the vet.

The tonic is a very good idea :D I also add a garlic bulb to my girls drinker and just let it breakdown. I also give them apple cider vinegar in their water for 1 week in 4. Not that I'm OCD or anything....but as I have some moulting I also give them poultry spice in their pellet porridge in the morning!!!!! Just basically keeping them well is best!!

But should you have ant concerns this forum is just great for help and advice!!!!Let us know how you go :D

Thanks mimi5. Im pretty sure they're all eating well. They certainly enjoyed their porridge with mashed banana and chopped grapes this evening (I felt sorry for them as its been blowing a gale and pouring down all day here)!! I poo pick every morning and all looks pretty normal there too :)

Ill look out for bubbly eyes etc. and any other changes over the next few days and I'll pop a garlic bulb in the water tomorrow.

Thanks so much! I'll let you know how they get on.
