Chooks New Home

Recommended Posts

Hi - I'm new to Omlet, so a big hello to everyone.

I'm also reasonably new to chickens - I've had my 9 lovely hens for a few months now. We decided to have some more which meant relocating our others as the existing coop would be too small for all of them. We converted a large shed into a new coop and when the new hens arrived (6 Lohmann Browns), we transferred them directly to the 'new' pad which also has the benefit of a little pen attached.

Can anyone advise me how to play this? My existing chooks are currently still in their old coop as I took the opportunity of keeping the new chooks separate for a while. How long should I do this? How on earth do I persuade my older chooks to give up their beloved little coop. I also have the added headache of a broody who's behaving like Godzilla!

When it comes time to allow all of the chickens to mix together, do I carry the older hens straight into the new shed? I'm sure that they won't go in through a strange new pophole without a lot of persuasion especially if it has a load of unfamiliar pullets inside! Eeeek...I'm winding myself up just writing about it. If someone can give me some advice, I would be really grateful.

Hello, welcome to the forum and congratulations on being hooked into the wonderful world of chickens - we all start with 'just a couple'! Start by reading this thread for some advice on introductions. Slowly, slowly is the mantra - don't worry because the hens will sort themselves out eventually but you want to avoid outright warfare. Let us know how you get on! :D
