meldownes
Hi this is my first post and Im new to keeping chickens. I purchased an Eglu cube with 4 metres of run in April and purchased 4 speckled hens from a local farmer. About a month ago I took on a Light Susssex Rooster (Foghorn Legforn), as we have trouble in our rural area with large birds and especially Ravens who've attacked my hens quite often till Mr Foghorn came along. My problem…My chickens are let out practically every day for hours at a time contained to a large garden. Ive got home tonight and there are quite a few feathers floating about in the run. Ive checked my rooster who has a bald patch near his bum which looks very sore. I de-liced my chickens about 6 weeks ago and clean bedding once a week. Im thinking the girls have tag teamed up against him and I'm worried for his safety. Im especially concerned as he was making funny noises too, but he's eating and drinking fine. Any ideas? sjp
it does happen I've got one that'll stand there while the younger girls merrily pull his neck feathers out cockerels don't rule the roost some think they think they do but the girls are the boss all 3 of mine have been 'slapped about' by at least one of the girls at some point and they all now know better than to get on the wrong side of a broody with chicks as for strange noises they do make some funny sounds at times I've got one that loves to growl, the youngest has a funny type of hoot that doesn't quite come off at times as for protection mine firmly believe in woman and children first unless it's running away from anything scary then they are the first to safety
