Upper respiratory infection

Recommended Posts

Hi a couple of months ago several of my chickens suddenly started heavy breathing and sounded very croaky. I took the worst to the vet who said it was a respiratory infection and prescribed Tylan. In the last few days a couple of my chickens have come down with the symptoms again, the same girls who had it previously, how can I stop the infection reacurring?

Other symptoms include sneezing, runny or puffy eyes and generally a bit lethargic but still eating/drinking well and got red comb.

I have been adding poultry spice to there food and garlic as read this can be beneficial.they have all been wormed, mited, extra. And cleaned out regularly.

Any advice or suggestions would be very helpful???? :o

A frequent cause for this is mould spores in the coop and inadequate ventilation. Mould grows in anything damp, including condensation on the walls inside. If you are having a reoccurrence of the infection it is because the original reason has not been spotted and rectified I think. Also need to be aware that respiratory infections cause permanent lung damage and make them more prone to re-infection anyway. I'd strip out the bedding and replace it with something that is definitely not dusty. We use dust extracted wood shavings. Also wipe over all the internal coop surfaces with something like Poultry Shield. Do not use Jeyes Fluid as the residual fumes can be fatal. Hope they all get better BattyNatty.
