Miss Pepperpot hybrid

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm new to Omlet but I'm hoping you experienced chicken keepers out there can help with a couple of questions on this hybrid.

I have been keeping chickens for around three years now - I was given three hybrid POL hens by the friend of a friend and whilst they have been lovely birds, I think their father was probably a bantam as they have all stayed small and laid small eggs. Two of them have sadly died and the third has almost stopped laying so I am looking to the future and restocking in Spring next year. After doing a bit of research I have settled on the Miss Pepperpot hybrid as providing a generous quantity of good sized eggs. Checking the various websites I have since become extremely confused as to just what a Miss Pepperpot is - I was originally told and the Omlet site says its a cross between a RIR, Maran and Plymouth rock but others (and elsewhere on this site) say it is a cross between a RIR and Plymouth rock only. It also seems to have a huge number of aliases including Rhode rock, black star, black pearl, Bovans nera etc.

My question is, are they all the same or should I make sure that I go for the three way hybrid? Is there any added benefit with the addition of the maran strain and how is the three way split achieved? - does a RIR cock mate with a hybrid hen from a maran/Plymouth rock cross?

Hope you can help me to make the right choice

Miss Pepperpot is Omlet's name for a black sex linked hybrid which is I thought a RIR bared Plymouth Rock cross. the main one been the Black Rock (the original black linked hybrid) and as you've found there are several names for the same cross as each hatchery/breeder has to give them there own brand/trade name (Black Rocks only come from one hatchery/breeder in Scotland) but to complicated more a fair number of poultry sellers sell the non Black Rocks (Black Rocks are only sold as Black Rocks ) under their own names basically their going to be more or less the same look but will vary to some degree in the number of eggs they lay in a year/ as to which one to buy that'll largely depend on which ones are sold locally to you but the Black Rocks are the bench mark for that particular cross as they were the first but that said a lot of black linked hybrids get sold as Black Rocks

I don't know the breed technicalities but we started off our chicken-keeping with a Miss Pepperpot and a Gingernut Ranger from Omlet. Pepper laid the biggest eggs we've had from six different chickens now and she was a beautiful looking chook, with iridescent plumage - although she wasn't very bright! I'd definitely recommend the Omlet birds.
